Opened in 2008, the Newcastle Community Centre is a multi-purpose facility consisting of a pool, gymnasium, community rooms and support spaces. Long-term plans for the facility include the addition of a two-pad arena.
The building is framed with a mixture of cast-in-place concrete, structural steel and timber structures.
Challenge: Design a unique pool space using a combination of steel and timber.
Solution: A series of steel plate moment frames were developed which supported timber beams and deck on the roof and walls. The asymmetrical frames required the addition of horizontal cross bracing to resist the drift of the building due to gravity loads. The bracing was placed on top of the deck to keep it from view, which required the development of hidden connection details to the steel frames. The ensemble gives the roof structure the appearance of a fine piece of furniture, sophisticated yet simple.
