In 2015, the Fort McMurray Airport Hotel will open its doors to serve the city’s new international airport development. The eight-storey structure is situated adjacent to the airport terminal and located between the departures roadway and the tarmac. An enclosed walkway will connect the hotel to the terminal.
Shelter Canadian Properties Ltd, developers and operators of many other hotels in Fort McMurray and across Western Canada, look forward to adding this hotel to its portfolio. The 324-room three-star hotel is being built in two phases. Phase One will result in 174 rooms and 145 parking stalls, and Phase Two will bring the hotel to completion. Once complete, the hotel will boast meeting rooms and other business facilities, as well as a pool and other amenities travelers can use to unwind.
Poor soil conditions necessitated careful coordination with the geotechnical consultant, special site preparation, and a raft foundation to support the building and minimize differential movements.
Challenge: Building conditions in Fort McMurray compel construction project managers to minimize the need for on-site labour and wait times for materials and pre-fabricated components.
Solution: A composite steel frame structure supports pre-engineered spanning elements. This system, while being quick to assemble, also accommodates a very tight floor-to-floor height restriction for the building.
