Designed as a “super hospital,” le Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) will be state-of-the-art, 21-storey hospital, the first of its size and complexity in Canada.
CHUM will include research laboratories, a clinical research and public health department and an educational department. Healthcare professionals will use advanced technologies including bio-informatics, imaging and biomedical engineering, as well as CHUM’s cyclotron, which will produce medical isotopes for research.
Given the multitude of services provided in this facility, the building enclosure must perform well in various unique and challenging internal environments while protecting occupants from the external environment.
Challenge: Québec’s Health Ministry requirements stipulate that zero condensation is allowed within the building envelope.
Solution: In order to set performance criteria for the external skin of the building, Entuitive performed intense thermal and CFD modeling to determine the risk of condensation occurring during severe winter conditions.
