Named in honour of Cassie Campbell, the former captain of Canada’s multi-Olympic-gold-medal-winning national women’s hockey team and Brampton’s hometown heroine, the Cassie Campbell Community Centre officially opened its doors in September 2008.
The state-of-the-art, multi-use community centre is the largest and most modern of its kind in Brampton, Ontario. It consists of a pool, a fitness space with a running track, a gymnasium, and a hockey arena (naturally) equipped with change rooms and support spaces.
Challenge: Design an exposed structure that serves as the key feature in the architecture of the building.
Solution: The design intent was to have the entire structure for the centre exposed to view. We worked with the architect to choose several framing systems, member sizes and connection details that were appropriate for the different spaces. The large volume of the pool was amplified through the use of shallow long span glulam beams and steel girders. The fitness area, arena and gym were framed with a careful organization of steel structure that complimented large glazed walls.
